Definition of Essential Driver Training
Essential Driver Training (EDT) is a training course that consists of lessons focused on fundamental driving skills, which is mandatory to the learner driver. It is required in RSA's Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program that would help learner drivers to achieve road safety skills.
EDT is just part of the learning process, which you will have to do more practice and attend more lessons so you can develop skills in safety driving.
Importance of EDT Lessons
Many researches show that inexperienced drivers and young drivers are the common victims in today’s vehicular accidents or get seriously injured in some collisions. So, EDT is introduced by RSA to help instill knowledge about critical driving, having the right behaviors and skills for new drivers.
If your learner permit in first B category for car driving is issued on or after April 4, 2011, you must complete first all lessons of EDT in order for you to finish the entire driving test successfully.
If it is not mandatory to complete EDT, you can still have the EDT course to increase your chances to pass the driving test and help you become a good driver.
Content of Essential Driving Training
In this course, EDT has 12 lessons with an allotted time of one hour each. Every lesson is designed to cover certain skills in critical driving and also enhance your skills in practical driving.
Once all lessons are completed, your progress is recorded in a logbook, specially issued by the Approved Driving Instructor (ADI).
You need to have a Sponsor, an experienced driver in your family or friends to supervise you during your practice even if you are not under the proper lesson setting. The Sponsor will take down notes of your progress in your logbook.
The Lesson Proper
Each lesson of EDT driving has particular objectives. Prepare yourself for every lesson basing on EDT Course Syllabus
Here are the 12 lessons:
LESSON 1: PROPER INSPECTIONS AND CONTROL OF THE CAR
LESSON 2: CORRECT ROAD POSITIONING
LESSON 3: CHANGING OF DIRECTION
LESSON 4: MANAGEMENT OF PROGRESS ON THE ROAD
LESSON 5: PROPER POSITIONING
LESSON 6: ANTICIPATION AND RIGHT REACTION
LESSON 7: ROAD SHARING
LESSON 8: DRIVING SAFELY ALONG WITH TRAFFIC
LESSON 9: CHANGING DIRECTION WITH COMPLEX SITUATIONS
LESSON 10: MANAGEMENT OF SPEED
LESSON 11: RELAX WHILE DRIVING
LESSON 12: DRIVING DURING AT NIGHT
After you have completed the EDT course, you still have to add ADI lessons to enhance your driving skills. Additionally, do a lot of practice sessions with your Sponsor so you can develop confidence necessary during your final driving test.
On your actual driving test, you bring with you the logbook, which you have completed and present it to your examiner during official test date.
